If hearing the name Wagoneer evokes certain nostalgic emotions, that’s because it should—the Wagoneer was the original full-size SUV that debuted in 1963. The full-size body-on-frame Wagoneer remained in production for 29 years, discontinued after the 1991 model year. Versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer nameplates existed in the XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee lineups until the name was finally dropped in 1994.
In 2022, the Wagoneer is back to reclaim its throne as the most off-road full-size, body-on-frame SUV. The 2022 Wagoneer and the more luxurious Grand Wagoneer are best described as premium extensions of the Jeep brand. While you will not find a Jeep badge on this Wagoneer, you can be sure that the same soul lurks behind the seven-slot grille as the Wagoneers that came before it.

Unsurprisingly, the 2022 Wagoneer Series III earned the highest scores regarding the interior scores in our Four Wheeler of the Year test. Thanks partly to the comfortable Nappa leather seats, elegant interior design, and powerful 950-watt McIntosh audio system with 19 speakers, it was hard to get our judges to leave the Wagoneer at the end of their drive. The Wagoneer’s interior was comfortable in any position, even in the rear, for adults of any height. The Wagoneer also received considerable praise for implementing the company’s latest Uconnect five infotainment software and a large 10.1-inch central touchscreen. The biggest gripe our judges had with the Wagoneer’s interior centered on the company’s choice of trim materials—specifically, the plastic wood trim that spans the width of the dash.
In contrast to the unanimous love for the Wagoneer’s interior, the car’s exterior design was much more polarizing. In our blind scoring, the 2022 Wagoneer Series III 4X4 exterior scored near the bottom of our group of six contenders. Overall, the group was sympathetic to Wagoneer’s front-end design.
Wagoneer’s pedigree showed what was important, with a pair of large, usable front tow hooks. They, like the Grand Cherokee, were chrome. In the rear, the Wagoneer had a standard two-inch barrel hitch. However, as is customary for the classroom these days, it was hidden behind a shutter panel. In another thoughtful touch, the Wagoneer comes with a hitch receiver recovery hook with the spare tire and tools. It is such little things that decide everything.
The 2022 Wagoneer is equipped with just one transmission option: a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with a 48-volt eTorque mild hybrid system. The same engine, minus the eTorque system, was also found in our Grand Cherokee L tester. Still, when tucked between the Wagoneer’s fenders, that mill produces 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. A TorqueFlite 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission backs the Wagoneer’s HEMI V-8 engine. Like the Grand Cherokee L’s transmission, the Wagoneer’s transmission was our judges’ favorite.
On the track, the Wagoneer felt a little out of its element. At 6,230 pounds, the Wagoneer was the heaviest car in our test by nearly 400 pounds. Despite this, it still managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.43 seconds. The Wagoneer ran to the finish line in 15.69 seconds at 89.7 mph in the quarter mile. It took 136.31 feet to accelerate the three-ton Wagoneer from 60 mph to zero. Those numbers, unfortunately, put the Wagoneer near the bottom of our test group.
